About us

Founded in 1982 in the coastal town of Aldeburgh, Suffolk, Thompson’s Gallery has earned a strong reputation for its focus on Modern British and Scottish art, particularly works influenced by the Scottish Colourists. Established by John and Sue Thompson, the gallery expanded into the Cotswolds and London’s West End and City by 1991, becoming an established name within the UK art world.

In 2011, Megan Thompson took over the gallery as its sole partner, continuing her parents’ legacy while introducing new directions. The gallery now operates in Aldeburgh and London, with an additional consultancy studio in Harpenden, Hertfordshire. It remains deeply focused on Scottish painting, especially the vibrant works influenced by the Scottish Colourists, alongside a broader selection of Modern British art.

Since 2018, Thompson’s Gallery has increasingly connected with South Africa, a shift driven by Megan’s marriage to a South African and her parents' frequent exploration of the country's vibrant and evolving art scene. This growing connection with South Africa has allowed the gallery to expand its offering, presenting contemporary South African artists alongside the established British and Scottish figures the gallery has championed for decades.

With more than four decades of expertise, Thompson’s Gallery continues to provide expert consultation, helping collectors navigate the world of 20th and 21st-century painting and sculpture. Its evolving focus now blends the rich traditions of British and Scottish art with an exciting and dynamic range of South African voices, reflecting the gallery’s international perspective and commitment to showcasing exceptional talent.
