Graeme Wilcox British, b. 1967
Graeme Wilcox graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1993. Since then, he has
continued to work as a figurative painter, working from his studio in Glasgow. His
subject matter is almost always the human figure, usually depicted in moments of
reflection or emotion. Many of his recent paintings have been re-imaginings of people or events seen as he journeys through the city. These paintings are an attempt to represent the strangeness and poignancy of people and everyday life. Alongside this work, he has continued to paint portraits of friends and acquaintances and an ongoing series of character portraits of anonymous commuters.
PAINTING AND DRAWING
Graeme’s paintings in oil sit somewhere within contemporary realism. Often the figure is rendered in a realistic manner against a blank or minimal background, suggestive of some urban space. He is interested in creating a subtle sense of movement or vibration within a painting using a hint of blurring which contrasts with the more static, realist paint handling employed elsewhere. Drawing remains an important part of Graeme’s practice. Working in ink and charcoal he produces drawings which often exaggerate contrasts and shadows to create an atmospheric space for his figures to inhabit.
EXHIBITING AND COLLECTIONS
Recent exhibitions include three solo shows in Antwerp in 2018,2020 and 2023. His work has been shown in the RA Summer Exhibition, the BP Portrait exhibition, The Columbia Threadneedle Prize exhibition in London. He is a regular exhibitor at the Scottish Portrait Awards and The Royal Society of Portrait Painters where he won the 2016 Drawing Prize. Graeme was also awarded the Towry Painting Prize at the 2013 National Open Art
exhibition at the Royal College of Art in London. His work is held in private collections throughout the UK, Europe, USA and Canada.
