Light on Water is David Cass’ current painting project. Three current / upcoming exhibitions will feature works from the series – at Joy Machine in Chicago, Thompson’s Gallery in Aldeburgh and The Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh. Among other exhibitions, one painting from the series was exhibited at Christie’s in London, another was shortlisted for the John Ruskin Prize 2025, and seven featured in Slow Praxis – an exhibition Cass co-curated with Tatha Gallery in Fife. In 2024 Light on Water was presented as a solo exhibition at The Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh. The collection features over one hundred paintings upon found objects, a selection of which can be seen on the following webpages. These abstract seascapes came about as a direct response to a period of working small, after the completion of a collection of miniature seascapes for the 2022 Venice Biennale. Conceptually, the series leads on from Rising Horizon – it’s both a study of light on water, and a survey of key themes and materials from across the last fifteen years.
