John Sydney Carter FRSS British, b. 1936
John was born in 1936 and was an apprentice industrial designer when he first began to draw and paint. During two years National Service John painted from life in Leicester and Portsmouth. During the Sixties John continued to paint winning 'Free Hanging' space courtesy of The Royal Society of British Artists as well as holding the post of creative director of a design company.
The end of the sixties was to mark a period in his output when he was creating painting alongside experimental metal sculptures. Travelling extensively in The Americas, Australia and Europe throughout the Seventies and Eighties was a constant source of inspiration. It was during frequent visits to Lanzarote, that John began working on a series of sculpture in iron and metal called 'The Edge' taking inspiration from the local environment and the sea.
John has shown in group shows at Shire Hall, Stafford, Woods Gallery and The Frink, Stoke-On-Trent. John has carried out many sculpture commissions including work for P&O and Porsche. His work is in private collections worldwide.

2001 Made a member of The Royal Society of Sculptors
2009 Awarded a Doctorate of Letters for his contributions to Sculpture
