About
Known for his atmospheric and emotive imagery, Matthew Draper has exhibited widely throughout the UK, establishing himself as one of the preeminent contemporary artists working in the medium of chalk pastel.

Draper’s work is characterised by an intense and energetic immediacy. He operates instinctively, with a pronounced physical and emotional investment that radiates through the breathtaking drawings. His style, sensitive as it is with the impact of light on the landscapes, harks to the great 19th-century ‘Luminist’ painters, such as Casper Frederick and Frederic Church.

In this spectacular body of work, Draper criss-crosses all Great Britain, from the West Coast of Scotland to the farthest reaches of Cornwall. His ethereal renderings of waterspouts off the Jurassic Coast, sunbeams over the Cuillin Hills, and distant city lights ensconced in hazy dusk convey a quality of memory, of sentiment and experience rather than photographic precision.
