Jack Morrocco
Making a Connection 3 - 20 Dec 2024 London Jack Morrocco is widely recognised as one of Scotland's most distinguished contemporary painters. With a career spanning over 50 years, he is celebrated as a modern-day Scottish Colourist, renowned for his masterful use of light. His work is highly regarded now and will continue to be appreciated by future generations. Today, his art has gained exciting recognition worldwide, and he has two major publications written about him: A Work in Progress by Roy McGregor and In Good Company by Eileadh Swan, both celebrating his 70th birthday.
Jack studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee from 1970 to 1974, earning a postgraduate year in 1975, along with the highest distinction available at the time, a highly commended post-diploma. In that same year, he was awarded the prestigious Farquhar Reid Travelling Scholarship, which allowed him to study in Paris and Florence. In 1973, he was selected to study with the renowned pop artist Sir Peter Blake at Hospitalfield House in Arbroath. After completing his formal education, Jack founded a design studio while continuing to pursue his passion for painting and exhibiting. In 1997, he committed himself fully to painting and now works from studios in both Fife, Scotland, and the Côte d'Azur in France.
One of Jack's most distinctive qualities is his versatility as an artist. He notes, "I get bored easily, so the idea of painting only one type of subject in one particular style doesn’t keep me creatively engaged. I need to be flexible and move between disciplines whenever I choose." This adaptability is reflected in his diverse body of work, each piece demonstrating his boundless creativity and dedication.
Jack's artwork can be divided into four primary themes, each illustrating his artistic range. His landscapes, particularly those of Venice and Parisian cafés, are celebrated for their vibrant energy and masterful depiction of light. These pieces capture the essence of their settings, full of life and atmosphere. His series of lily ponds, inspired by a walk with his daughter Nina through Lade Braes in St Andrews, evoke tranquillity and beauty, blending nature and reflection in a way that resonates universally.
Jack’s contemporary still lifes reflect his intellectual curiosity and are influenced by his encounters with visiting lecturers like Sir Peter Blake, as well as his appreciation for artists such as Picasso and Braque. These works explore deeper, more abstract themes, challenging the conventions of traditional still life painting. His studio scenes, on the other hand, draw inspiration from the classical tradition of the Dutch masters, often featuring his wife, Fiona.
Throughout all of Jack’s creations, his command of structure and light remains a constant, breathing life into every subject and establishing him as a true master of his craft.
