Michael Adamson returns to Thompsons Gallery with a new solo exhibition, "An Abstract Landscape," open to the public from November 1st-18th. A Canadian artist, Adamson is internationally recognized for his elegant blend of figurative and abstract styles which together create an artwork which may be interpreted in multiple ways. In this post we shall briefly dive into his creative process.

With this exhibition, Adamson plays with the idea that "these squares of canvas are really just squares of canvas" and that meaning is drawn out from the viewer. These landscapes are created out of the notion that we associate "a painting with a picture and a horizontal line with geography." In this way, coloured squares become more than that, they become skies, water, trees, and the earth.
In addition, the gridlike pattern of the paint on canvas echoes the canvas that it is painted on. The canvas itself is a grid constructed from the weaving of cotton and linen fibers which become the foundation for Adamsons playful pieces.
Adamson's last solo exhibition Northern Vistas with Thompsons Gallery London was met with resounding success in 2021 and here in Harpenden, we will bring his signature style of large, colorful canvases to the corner of Church Green!
