December Artist of the Month

Roy Wright

As we head into the winter season, we have just passed the time where the trees have changed into a kaleidoscope of colors, beatiful hues of yellows, oranges, and reds. This has inspired us at Thompsons Gallery to highlight the artist we are looking at today, distinguished draughtsman Roy Wright. Wright studied illustration at the Hull College for Art, and since then has attained numerous awards over the past twenty years, including the Graphic Artist of the Year Award (British Press Awards, 1987 & '88), the Daler Rowney Award at the Pastel Society Annual Exhibition, and the Willie Hoffman-Guth Award. He is also an elected member of the Pastel Society.

One of Wright's major emphases in his work are his trees. As the artist says himself:

"There is something extraordinary about the relationship between us and trees, the need to be close to and connect with nature, walking through forests renewing our spirits with their beauty and the constantly changing seasons.”

These arboreal works of art are juxtaposed with his other focus of city landscapes, creating a dialogue which everyone can engage with. Wright's drawing are very large compositions, in which he spares no detail. Every leaf and peice of bark is fully rendered using charcoal, Wright's primary medium of choice. The most incredible part of this is that all of his works are drawn entirely freehand, without any tracing or gridding!

Roy Wright's works have been presented in several exhibitions at Thompsons, including our On Paper exhibition in 2022 as well as our Annual Exhibitions. Wright is also regularly exhibited in our three galleries throughout the year. His works are held in numerous private and corporate collections across the UK and the U.S.A, perhaps soon his work will be in yours!
