As winter comes around full swing, there is bound to be snow falling in the mountains at home and abroad. And that means one of England's favourite winter sports, skiiing! Andrew Macara is the artist of this month, well known for depicting this popular pastime in many of his paintings.
Macara is a largely self taught painter, after a brief time studying with Leonard Fuller at the St Ives School of Painting in Cornwall. He was elected member of the New English Art Club in 1984, as well as being part of the Royal Society of British Artists. He has exhibited in some of the most prestigious galleries in the UK over the past 30 years and continues to do so.
Looking at Macara's paintings, one of the first things that stand out is the artist's mastery over the presentation of light. His paintings appear to be positively glowing, as if the light is refracting off of the snow, water, or whitewashed walls and jumping out of the canvas. Macara selects the scenes he paints through his extensive travels around the globe, allowing for the variety of images that his ouvre includes. As the artist states, "The search for new, original and interesting images is ongoing and endless." However, his popular winter scenes are still influenced by his local Derbyshire, where the artist grew up and still lives.
Thompsons Gallery has exbibited work by Macara for over 20 years, he is featured in many of our annual exhibitions. His work can be found in the National Collection, the Museum of Wales, the colelction of the Duke of Devonshire, and the Derby Museum and Art Gallery.
